The world is currently at a crossroads. Many of us are growing tired of the “new normal” that has required us to have varying levels of shelter in place, though we understand the need. As things progress, we are coming out of our cocoons, testing the waters of leaving our homes while still taking the precautions that make sense based on the available data.

As a mental health professional I am used to being the one helping others. It’s what I trained for and what I enjoy. I am not always successful of course, but I do what I can. Sadly, during this pandemic I have found myself feeling powerless in so many ways.

As clinical professionals we often deal with grief. Losing someone close to you is never easy even if your personal and religious beliefs believe that your loved one is going to someplace far better and that our life here is but a stage of a much larger path.

It’s arguable about how old I was when I entered the field of human services but I was doing state and national conference lectures and meeting with high powered politicians since I was 16. Life was much different then, in so many ways.

With the late passing of Aretha Franklin I was reminded of one of my favorite songs R-E-S-P-E-C-T. The rules of sibling rivalry seem to always have some universal themes among them. Competing for mom and dad’s attention (positively or negatively), trying to outdo one another in school, sports, or home responsibilities, assertion of power within the family unit, lack of RESPECT for one another, negative parental role models, etc. and the list goes on.
