  • Empathy for Counselors

    The cornerstone of counseling is empathy. Without it we are ineffective in our work. Empathy is a skill we can teach and cultivate. Empathy involves perspective taking wherein a person takes the perspective of another person, refrains from judgment, recognizes emotion in other people, and communicates all of that. “I see where you are at, I feel where you are at, I feel with you.”

  • Signs You’ve Found the Right Counselor

    One of the reasons that I became a counselor is that once upon a time I needed a counselor and I couldn’t find the “right” one. I went to ten counselors before I found one that was right for me. I realized through that process that not every counselor is right for every client.
