I attended the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) conference in Orlando on August 2 – 3, 2018. I met some wonderful colleagues who were doing great work in their communities, and my presentation on “Working with the Mother-Daughter Relationship” was well attended and sparked lively discussion.

In January 2016, I wrote a blog on Sexism in Therapy for the Huffington Post where I shared an experience I had with my psychotherapist, whose internalized sexism stopped her from recognizing me as a person in my own right.

Maternal jealousy is a common issue between mothers and adult daughters today. In this blog I explain why maternal jealousy is so common. Through Sarah’s story (not her real name) I talk about how therapists, mothers, and daughters can detect maternal jealousy, especially when these feelings are hidden and unacknowledged due to the shame society attaches to them. And I provide some tips on how I help mothers and daughters heal jealous feelings.

In this blog I talk about a dynamic I see often between mothers and adult daughters, where “the river of nurturing flows backwards” up the generations from the adult daughter to the mother.

In this blog I tell the story of how I came to pioneer the mother-daughter relationship specialism. It’s been an interesting journey that has taught me to believe in my work, even when others didn’t. And to recognize that opportunities present themselves when you least expect them.
