    Deb Del Vecchio-Scully, NCC, LPC, DCMHS, is a licensed professional and nationally-certified counselor. She holds American Mental Health Counselor Association (AMHCA) diplomat status as a Clinical Mental Health Specialist in Trauma Counseling. She is the former Clinical Recovery Leader and Trauma Specialist of the Newtown Recovery and Resiliency Team serving the Sandy Hook/Newtown community in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook School shooting.

    • The ABC’s of Fireworks and Triggering

      Celebrating July 4th is an American tradition complete with barbecues, parades and fireworks. It is pure summertime fun at its best. Unless you are someone who has been exposed to the impact of gun violence as a survivor of war, inner city, interpersonal or school gun violence. For you the bright light and loud booms of fireworks can trigger PTSD symptoms even for those whose exposure was many years ago. As a counselor specializing in trauma, I have learned there is no expiration date on triggering.

    • The Choice of Forgiveness

      I volunteered at a community event this weekend held for the residents of Newtown to come together in a day of healing. Nearly 18 months ago, this community suffered the unspeakable horror of the killings of 20 first grade children and six teachers during a school shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. This event brought together people from throughout the country who had suffered their own losses secondary to school violence at Columbine High School, Virginia Tech and at the Nickle Mines Amish School.

    • Grieving Mothers

      “Let’s get over it and move on” is a comment left on an article in memoriam to those who lost their lives at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in today’s newspaper. If only it was that simple, if only there could be a magic wand that would miraculously take away the pain and traumatic grief for those spending Mother’s Day without their children today.
