Dr. Gladding’s words, kindness, and wisdom will live on through many counseling students, supervisees, fellow counselors, counselor educators, and colleagues who he influenced over the years.

Mister Rogers did not shy away from discussing challenging topics on his program, and he helped children understand ways for dealing with sadness and death. Let’s explore three tools he provided his television neighbors for this necessary struggle.

“It is a beautiful day in the neighborhood…” perhaps you recall the Mister Rogers Neighborhood theme song with nostalgia and visions of him changing from his blazer to his soft hand knit cardigan sweaters that his mother made for him. One thing I appreciated about his theme song, was that he wanted us to know that it could be a beautiful day in the neighborhood regardless of what the weather was like outside.

The importance of seeking to understand clients cannot be overemphasized, and it is often painful for beginning counseling students to slow down and seek to be present with clients and hear their stories without rushing in to first problem solve, fix, or give advice.

The month of May is graduation season and ‘tis the season for counselor trainees graduating with their master’s degrees in hand to begin their post-graduation journey towards licensure starting with residency. Part of this process includes finding an approved supervisor to register in order to start logging hours towards licensure.
